Why Vegan?

There are three great reasons to feed your companion animal a vegan diet. For the environment, for their health and for the animal welfare. On this page you will find reliable links and information on all three. Every effort has been made to provide the most up to date and accurate information possible.

It's relatively easy to maintain a healthy vegan dog. Cats are more tricky, but with commitment, it can be done for most but not all cats. The information provided here is to help you make informed decisions on your companion's diet. Read as much as you can, and do your own research. I am sure you will find that with a little effort you can help your dog or cat transition to a vegan or at least mostly vegan diet.

Vegan Companion Animals

My dogs are vegan because I can't justify feeding them a cow, pig, chicken or lamb because I like dogs better.

It is just like man's vanity and impertinence to call an animal dumb because it is dumb to his dull perceptions.
Mark Twain

Environmental Reasons

The production of meat has a highly negative environmental impact. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations 2006 report "Livestock's Long Shadow" here are just a few of the consequences:

  • 26% of non-ice covered terrestrial land is used for grazing and equivalent activities
  • 18% of CO2 and greenhouse gasses are produced by livestock which is more than the entire transport sector.
  • 55% of soil erosion is caused by the livestock industry
  • 37% of pesticide is used to spray feed for livestock, most of which runs off in to the water shed.

Health Reasons

Providing a vegan diet for your companion will ensure thier health by:

  • Reducing the risk of contaminants being introduced in to the food
  • eliminating the risk of hormones or pesticides concentrated in animal tissue from entering the food.
  • Empowering the animals caretaker by allowing them better control of the quality of the ingredients.
  • Tailoring to your companinons diet to thier specitic needs.

Compassionate REasons

If you are concerned about animal welfare and happiness switching to a vegan diet allows you to:

  • Save the lives of and prevent crueltuy to livestock.
